How to Pray When You Don't Know What to Say

By Alex Gomez2026-02-285 min read

One of the biggest barriers to prayer is the belief that you need to be good at it.

We hear pastors pray with eloquence. We read prayers from saints who seemed to have a direct line to heaven. And we think, "I could never pray like that."

Good news: you don't have to.

How Babies Learn to Talk

Think about how a baby communicates. First, it's just crying. Then babbling. Then single words. Then broken sentences. Eventually — full conversations.

No parent looks at their babbling toddler and says, "Come back when you can speak properly." They lean in. They listen harder. They celebrate every sound.

God does the same with you.

Start Messy

Your prayers don't need to sound like a sermon. They can sound like:

  • "God, I don't even know what to say right now."
  • "I'm angry and I don't know why."
  • "Help. Just... help."
  • "Thank you for today. That's all I've got."

Every single one of those is a real prayer. And God hears every one.

Prayer Is a Conversation, Not a Performance

The best way to start praying is to stop treating it like a speech and start treating it like a conversation. You're talking to a Father who already knows what you need, already loves you, and isn't grading your grammar.

A Simple Framework

If you need a starting point, try this:

  • Thank — Start with one thing you're grateful for
  • Confess — Be honest about one thing you're struggling with
  • Ask — Bring one need to God
  • Listen — Sit quietly for 60 seconds and see what comes to mind

That's it. Four steps. Five minutes. Do it every day and watch what happens over the next month.

You'll Get Better — But That's Not the Point

The point of prayer isn't to get better at praying. It's to get closer to God. And closeness comes from consistency, not eloquence.

Show up. Be honest. Let God do the rest.
